Five Natural Remedies to Stop Snoring

Snoring can leave you tired and cranky in the morning. Follow these five steps for sound sleep.

Here’s a classic one-liner: The wife says to her husband: “Do you know that snoring causes a lack of sleep? MINE!” Snoring is the butt of many jokes, but it’s no laughing matter to the millions of adults who snore and the people who love them.

An estimated 45% of normal adults snore at least occasionally and 25% do so habitually, according the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Problem snoring is more common in men and in people who are overweight. And snoring usually gets worse with advancing age.

“Snoring is incredibly prevalent and people joke about it, yet it can create serious problems within the family,” says Mark Mahowald, MD, director of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center and a past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. “Many couples can’t sleep in the same room because of snoring.”

Buyers should beware before purchasing over-the-counter sprays and pills that promise to stop snoring, Mahowald warns. “There are all sorts of sprays, pills and tablets that claim to make snoring better, but I have yet to see any validation by scientific studies to support those claims,” he says.

Fortunately, there are lifestyle changes and natural remedies that can help you stop snoring.

1. Change your sleep position.

Snoring occurs when the soft palate, uvula, tongue, tonsils and/or muscles in the back of the throat rub against each other and generate a vibrating sound during sleep.

So, at first, snoring “occurs only when you are lying on your back [and] your tongue falls back and increases airway resistance,” Mahowald explains. That’s why some folk remedies called for sewing tennis balls on the back of pajamas, he says.

“If you are one of these snorers, sleeping on your sides will usually help” you stop snoring, told Mahowald.

You may also want to try raising the head of your bed 4 inches, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. To do this, place blocks or a wedge under the head of the mattress.

However, as snoring progresses, it can occur when you are sleeping on your side or with your head elevated. Eventually, snoring can become present all night and at all positions. Then, it’s time to examine your lifestyle.

2. Lose 10% of your body weight to help stop snoring.

Overweight people tend have bulky neck tissue which increases snoring risk. If you are overweight, losing just modest amount of weight – even just 10% of your body weight — can help you stop snoring, Mahowald says.

3. Avoid alcohol and sedatives to stop snoring.

“Anything that causes sedation such as sleeping pills or low dose alcohol can also cause snoring because they tend to suppress your breathing drive,” says Robert W. Clark, MD, medical director of the Regional Sleep Disorders Center at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

If you snore because you have a couple of drinks or a sedative at night, either cut back or cut it out altogether, he advises.

4. Inhale steam before bed to stop snoring.

Nasal congestion can often cause snoring. Clarke suggests you try to reduce congestion before bedtime by deep breathing steam through your nose.

“Steam vaporizers are worth their weight in gold,” says Clarke. “And so is running hot water, putting a towel over your head and inhaling steam to loosen mucus-causing congestion.”

5. Try nasal strips to stop snoring.

Studies show that nasal strips can provide temporary relief from congestion and may also help some people stop snoring.

“It’s easier to breathe when your nostrils are open wide, so nasal strips, which are worn on the nose, can help if snoring is coming from your nose,” Mahowald says. The catch? Most often snoring stems from base of tongue or soft palate — not the nose.

Heart dangers of caffeinated energy drinks

A recent report of a life-threatening heart attack in a young healthy male suggests care is needed with caffeinated energy drinks.
Caffeinated energy drinks are widely promoted to give people the buzz and lift needed to get through a tough day. One such tough day became even more “arresting” for a healthy 28-year-old male.

As reported in the Medical Journal of Australia (2009;190:41-43), a motocross rider looking for that little bit extra consumed up to 8 cans of caffeinated energy drink throughout a tough day of competition.

Around 3pm, 20 minutes after his last race, he collapsed. When paramedics arrived, his heart was fibrillating (fluttering). Emergency cardiac shock treatment and drug administration saved his life. He was rushed to the local hospital where he remained under close observation for the next 6 days.

Sudden deaths, or near misses, are extremely rare in people under the age of 40, especially in those without obvious risk factors. In this man’s case, the likely culprit was the ingestion of the caffeine. Each can contains 80mg of caffeine, giving a total dose of around 640mg over the 7-hour period.

Reports of life-threatening responses to caffeine at the level consumed by the rider are rare. However, some energy drinks, including the brand consumed by this man, also contain the amino acid taurine. Taurine, like caffeine, affects the functions of calcium in cells. Calcium is required for electrical signals, critical for heart function. The cardiologists who managed this person in recovery have suggested that perhaps the combination of high caffeine and taurine intake in susceptible people could trigger a heart attack.

With the same levels of caffeine in each drink as an espresso coffee, caffeinated energy drinks pack a real punch. They are not an ideal substitute for sports drinks (or even plain water) in providing effective hydration. — CHOICE Health Reader, March 2009

Butterfly Rash

A butterfly rash across the face is often the first sign of lupus erythematosis. But don’t jump to conclusions. “It could be rosacea, it could be contact dermatitis. Unfortunately, sometimes it is a sign of lupus,” says University of Miami dermatologist Paolo Romanelli, MD. Only further tests can tell if it’s really lupus.

Velvet Plaques

Velvety plaques around the neck and/or armpit suggest diabetes. This condition — acanthosis nigricans — could be benign, or just from being obese. But it is very often a sign of diabetes, and may indicate an internal malignant cancer.

Leg Plaque: Red on Edge, Gold in Center

Doctors call it necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum. As the name suggests, it’s a distinctive sign of diabetes. And not a good sign. This skin condition suggests the underlying diabetes may have damaged eyes and kidneys.

Itchy, Violet Bumps on Wrist

Lichen planus is a rash made up of reddish-purple, flat-topped bumps that may itch like crazy. It usually appears on the wrists or ankles, but may be on the lower back, neck, legs, and genitals. The cause isn’t known — but if you have it, you’ll need to get liver tests. It could be a sign of hepatitis C.

Flesh Colored, Orange-Peel Patches on Back

Shagreen patches are flesh-colored lesions on the lower back that have the texture of an orange peel. They often occur with other skin signs: red or brown acne-like bumps spreading across the cheeks and nose; and ash-leaf spots of under-pigmented skin, most often on the trunk, that are oval at one end and pointy at the other. These are signs of a rare genetic disease called tuberous sclerosis that causes benign tumors to grow in the brain and other vital organs.

Tripe Palms

Tripe palms describes a skin condition in which the skin of the palm becomes thick and velvety-white with pronounced folds in the lines of the hand. The skin resembles boiled tripe. It’s a sign of cancer. If only the palms are involved, it’s most likely lung cancer. If tripe palms is accompanied by acanthosis nigricans, it’s most likely gastric cancer.

Hardening of Skin in Extremities, “Wooden” Hands and Feet

First described in 1997, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis starts as a brown discoloration and indentation of the lower arms and legs. Very soon, the hands and feet become brown and like wood. Sometimes there’s also a small yellow spot in the eye. Researchers only recently found that the gadolinium contrast agent used during MRI exams triggers this condition in some patients with kidney failure.

Scaly Rash on Buttocks, Red Tongue

Fortunately, necrolytic migratory erythema is pretty rare. It’s a red, scaly rash, sometimes with small erosions of the skin, usually seen in elderly patients. It tends to start in the fold of the buttocks or palms but can be elsewhere on the body. A bright red, painful tongue is common. The condition usually signals a pancreatic tumor, usually a glucogenoma.

Not All Skin Conditions Scary

Many skin conditions do not indicate that anything else is wrong with you. For example, granuloma annulare is raised, reddish or flesh-colored bumps forming ring patterns on the hands and feet. They usually go away within two years, and don’t mean anything is wrong with you.

Consumer Reports Selects Sunscreens It Says Are Best at Warding Off Wrinkles, Sunburn, and Skin Cancers

May 25, 2010 — A major consumers’ group has rated the sunscreens it says work best at blocking harmful ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B radiation that cause sunburns, wrinkles, and certain skin cancers.

Consumer Reports Health tested 12 products and found four it says protect a touch better than the others.

The top four are:

* Up & Up Sport Continuous SPF 30, by Target. It is administered by spray and costs $0.88 per ounce.

* Walgreens Sport Continuous SPF 50. Also a spray. Cost, $1.33 per ounce.

* Banana Boat Sport Performance Continuous SPF 30. Spray. Cost, $1.60 per ounce.

* Aveeno Continuous Protection SPF 50. Spray. Cost, $2 an ounce.

The products were tested in an outside laboratory, which checked product claims of how well their sun protection factor, or SPF, lasted on volunteers who soaked in water for 80 minutes. SPF rates the level of UVB protection.

The FDA has proposed a UVA star rating system for sunscreen labels of one to four stars to indicate the level of UVA protection. Currently there is no protection factor for UVA radiation on any labels.

The top four sunscreens provided “very good” UVA protection and “excellent” UVB protection, and met their SPF claims even after treated skin was in water for 80 minutes.

Each of the sunscreens had a moderately intense floral or citrus scent and left little residue on the skin.

Up & Up also received a “best buy” ranking from Consumer Reports Health. All four of the top brands cost a lot less than La Roche-Posay, which costs $18.82 per ounce.

Ranking below the top four were:

* Coppertone Water Babies, with an SPF of 50 and a cost per ounce of $1.38. It is a lotion.

* Coppertone UltraGuard Continuous rated a 70+ in SPF, costing $1.62 per ounce. Spray.

* No-Ad with Aloe and Vitamin rated 45 on the SPF scale, costing $0.59 per ounce. Lotion.

* Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist with Helioplex had a 45 SPF, costing $1.90 per ounce. Spray.

* Badger scored a PDF of 30, costing $4.83 per ounce. Lotion.

* La Roche-Posay Anthelios 40 with Mexoryl SX, scored a 40 SPF, costing $18.82 per ounce. Cream.

* Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535 Expedition scores a SPF of 30, costing $3.50 per ounce. Pump spray.

* Burt’s Bees Chemical-Free with Hemp Seed Oil got a 30 SPF, costing $4 per ounce. Lotion.

Consumer Reports Health says the active ingredient in Burt’s Bees, titanium dioxide, does not absorb the entire UVA spectrum as effectively as alternatives like avobenzone.

Avon, Consumer Reports Health says, makes no claim about protection from UVA rays, but the product doubles as a bug repellent.

Tips for Avoiding Sunburn

The report says sunbathers should buy sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which it says is enough for most people, and that sunscreens also should be water resistant.

Consumer Reports Health offers the following recommendations:

* Adults looking for full-body protection should apply 2 to 3 tablespoons of lotion 15 to 30 minutes before going out into the sun. The screen should be reapplied every two hours or after swimming or sweating. It says putting on sunscreen spray when it’s windy can be a tricky proposition.

* Don’t spray or rub sunscreen on clothes, because the products can stain.

* People should wear tightly woven clothing and a hat, limit exposure in the sun, and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.

* If the sunscreen you buy has no expiration date, write down when you buy it with a permanent marker. Discard at the expiration date, or when you’ve had the product for more than two years, when potency is often lost.

“A top-performing sunscreen isn’t going to give you any protection if its smell or the way it feels on your skin is so offensive to you that you won’t use it,” Gayle Williams, deputy editor of Consumer Reports Health, says in a news release. “The Aveeno Continuous protection spray is one of the mildest in terms of scent and leaves a bit of a greasy residue that is mild compared to some others. But if you prefer that beach scent, you might try the Up & Up by Target or the Walgreens Sport Continuous.”

Menyentuh soal cinta, jangan pula anda lupa melakukan perubahan kepada diri dengan meletakkan keazaman yang tinggi dalam hal-hal melibatkan dunia percintaan.

1. Lupakan masa lalu

Menemui cinta baru mungkin mendatangkan kesan positif. Tetapi, jangan pula anda terus membawanya berjumpa dengan seluruh ahli keluarga. Tunggulah sehingga waktu yang tepat dan jangan sesekali merosakkan hubungan yang baru dibina itu. Hindari berbicara tentang masa depan saat hubungan baru berumur setahun jagung. Nikmatilah waktu perkenalan ini untuk memantapkan hati anda dan pasangan.

5. Jangan terlalu memilih

Setiap orang pasti ada kekurangannya, jadi apabila anda begitu obses akan kekurangan pasangan, mungkin anda sukar untuk menemui cinta baru. Sekurang-kurangnya selidik dulu kelebihan yang ada pada dirinya.

6. Buat keputusan

Tenaga Reiki

Reiki adalah suatu tenaga spiritual untuk kehidupan seharian. Tenaga yang berada di sekeliling kita dan di dalam diri kita harus digunakan dengan sebaiknya. Kita sedar dan terasa adanya tenaga tersebut, mungkin cara atau teknik untuk memperolehi dan menggunakan tenaga tersebut yang kita tidak tahu dan perlu dipelajari. Teknik Reiki ini salah satu daripada caranya.

Dengan mempraktiskan teknik Reiki ini, kita mungkin boleh menambahkan lagi kekuatan jiwa dan spiritual yang agak lemah.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ‘ray-key’) can be translated as ‘rei’ meaning ‘spiritual’ (or universal) and ‘ki’ meaning meaning ’energy’. So Reiki is the channeling of spiritual energy for the recipients highest good – to balance the mind, body and soul and this in turn can bring about healing. Reiki was initially a self-healing method which then developed into a method to help others. It is quite common for people to go on to learn Reiki themselves after receiving Reiki from a practitioner.

The term ‘healing’ comes from the ancient Saxon word ‘haelen’ which means ‘to make whole’ – as in mind, body and spirit, and should not be confused with a cure for disease. Reiki is complimentary to modern medicine and not an alternative therapy. The way in which the energy chandelled is used by the body is not under the control of the practitioner, so I make no claims to cure imbalances. Receiving Reiki is a deeply relaxing experience. It is very much a partnership as the person receiving Reiki, does so with intent that it will benefit them. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of Reiki, although further studies are needed.

Reiki is a wonderful energy not just to receive, but also to channel, it allows clarity of thought and a deep relaxation and in some cases it brings about a complete change of life. There are many styles of Reiki. I practice a form of Reiki that has its roots in the original Japanese methods.

Distance healing can be sent and will be received at time to suit the individual as Reiki (and indeed all energy work) is not constrained by time and space. A Western development has been to give Reiki to animals and plants. Most animals welcome Reiki and cats seem particularly curious, while horses and dogs also enjoy it. House plants seem to thrive on a little Reiki to their roots!

Shibumi International Reiki Association

Reiki is a form of spiritual energy and for many practitioners, a way of life. It is a healing system and not a religion and as such is acceptable to people from a wide range of faiths however, you do not have to believe in any form of religion for it to be effective. Indeed, you don’t even have to believe in Reiki for it to work!

Reiki was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui around 1920, though elements go back many hundreds of years. The history of Reiki is complex and constantly changing as new information is brought to light in Japan. Traditional Japanese Reiki practitioners carry out daily self-healing, meditation, energy exercises to keep their bodies in balance and to assist the clean flow of energy. They also recite the Precepts – rule for living.
